About

I am using this blog and my newly minted domain mainetravelog.com as a means of capturing everything I learn and know about my travels to the wonderful state of Maine.

Why Maine? When I was a kid back in the 60s, my parents heard about a little island in Maine called Bailey Island (or as we always called it Bailey’s Island). It’s Just due south of Brunswick in a little chain of islands that jut out into Casco Bay. Great Island, Orr’s Island, and then Bailey Island at the end.  My family (my parents, 4 sisters and myself) started vacationing either on Bailey Island, or places nearby, occasionally venturing out to other places in Maine, but we always seemed to come back to Bailey Island. Most often we stayed at Cook’s Motel. Back then the Cook family owned the Motel and a restaurant that overlooks the worlds only cribstone bridge, which is the bridge onto the island.

After I got married in the mid 80s, my wife and I started vacationing in Maine and continued after we had kids, often camping instead of staying in motor courts. We started searching out places that were more kid/family friendly like the campground at Old Orchard Beach. Eventually we decided to buy a second home  in preparation for making Maine our permanent home. The information in this blog is the result of our home purchase and eagerness to see as much of and learn as much about the state of Maine.
